What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the expected parts and layout of a chosen text type, such as a letter, report, or presentation. They apply those conventions consistently so readers can follow the work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student includes the required parts, places them correctly, and keeps the format consistent. The finished work is easy for its intended reader to follow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may focus on spelling and grammar while ignoring layout, headings, labels, or source information. They may also mix conventions from different formats, such as using letter greetings in a report.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a one-page report with no title, inconsistent headings, and an incomplete source entry. Ask them to correct the format and label each change.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cut-up parts of a business letter and have them arrange, label, and glue the parts in the correct order.
Ask students to compare a report and a personal letter, then write three reasons their layouts differ.
Play Format Fix-It: teams earn points by correcting headings, spacing, labels, and source lists in sample documents.
Have students create a one-page club flyer with a clear title, event details, contact information, and readable spacing.
