What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students participate in partner, small-group, and whole-class discussions using suitable words, tone, and turn-taking. They listen closely, paraphrase ideas, ask relevant questions, and respond to what others say.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students take turns, stay on topic, and choose words and tone that fit the setting. They accurately paraphrase others, ask useful follow-up questions, and build on or respectfully challenge an idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think active listening means staying quiet until their turn. They may repeat a classmate’s words without showing understanding, interrupt, dominate the conversation, or ignore ideas they disagree with.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs the prompt, “Should fifth graders have homework every night?” Each student must paraphrase the partner’s view, ask one relevant question, and respond respectfully.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paper, tape, and straws to build a tower while each student must paraphrase one teammate’s idea before adding another.
Discuss, “What makes a group discussion fair and useful?” and ask students to support each rule with a specific example.
Play Listening Bingo with squares such as paraphrased an idea, asked a follow-up question, invited a speaker, and disagreed respectfully.
Have students role-play a student council meeting where they discuss a playground change and agree on one recommendation for the principal.
