What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to or read stories and poems, then talk about who or what they are about. They identify the setting, recount key events, and use details from words and pictures.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student names key characters, describes the setting, and recounts major events in order. The student uses words or pictures from a poem to explain its topic or feeling.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a favorite picture instead of telling what the text is about. They may mix up characters and setting or retell events out of order.

How to Assess It

Read a short picture book aloud, then ask: “Who is the story about, where does it happen, and what happens first and last?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs character, setting, and event picture cards to sort after hearing a familiar story.

  2. Read a short poem, then ask students to draw and explain the picture the words created in their minds.

  3. Play Story Sequence Relay by having teams place three illustrated event cards in beginning, middle, and end order.

  4. Read a classroom routine story and compare its events with what students do during the same routine.
