What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select images, audio, video, charts, or links that support a clear message. They combine different media formats with speaking or writing and explain how each choice makes the topic meaningful to the audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses credible, relevant media rather than adding decoration. The media is placed purposefully, credited when needed, and clearly strengthens the audience's understanding of the main idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume that more media always makes a message stronger. They may choose an exciting image or clip that is only loosely connected, or insert media without explaining its relevance.
How to Assess It
- Give students a paragraph about later school start times and three media options. Ask them to choose one and explain in two sentences how it strengthens the message.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short article and five media files, then have them build one slide using two files to strengthen its claim.
Show two versions of a presentation slide, then ask students to write which media choice better supports the claim and why.
Run a claim-and-media matching game where teams pair claim cards with images, charts, audio clips, or videos and defend each match.
Have students create a digital public service post about a local issue using a photo and one data display.
