What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify at least two messages in one story, drama, or poem. They trace how characters, conflicts, and key events build each message. They explain where the ideas develop similarly or differently.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states themes as complete ideas, not single-word topics. The student selects evidence from different parts of the text and explains how it builds each theme. The comparison addresses both similarities and differences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label a topic, such as friendship, instead of stating a message about friendship. They may cite one scene rather than evidence across the text. They may compare plot events without explaining how those events build each theme.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket after a shared story: “Name two themes. For each, cite one early and one late detail, then compare how the themes develop.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed event cards from a short story; students sort them into two theme lines and arrange each line from early to late.
Ask, “Which theme changes more as the protagonist acts, and which scenes prove it?” then have partners defend different answers.
Play Theme Evidence Relay: teams match quotations to two themes, place them in plot order, and explain one comparison to score.
Compare two messages in a song’s lyrics, noting how repeated lines and changing verses build each message over time.
