What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop a clear, defensible interpretation of a challenging text and support it with carefully chosen evidence and close reasoning. They organize ideas so the analysis builds logically while keeping a fitting tone and consistent voice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student writes a nuanced thesis, and each paragraph advances it with relevant evidence and clear reasoning. The analysis addresses tension or complexity, uses precise language, and ends by explaining the larger meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often retell the text, stack quotations without explaining them, or assume more length means greater depth. They may use a five-paragraph structure even when the ideas do not build, or shift between casual and inflated language.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short excerpt from the current text and ask, "What tension does the author create, and how do two details develop it?" Require a claim, two embedded details, linked reasoning, and a formal tone.

Ways to Teach It
Print paragraphs from a sample analysis, cut them apart, then have pairs reorder them and label how each paragraph advances the thesis.
Ask students to write for five minutes: Which contradiction in the text matters most, and what does it reveal?
Give teams claim, evidence, and reasoning cards to match, then challenge them to identify and revise the weakest connection.
Have students analyze how a newspaper editorial organizes its argument and adjusts tone for its intended audience.
