What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop a focused research question, locate trustworthy sources, and take notes that separate evidence from their own thinking. They compare sources, synthesize findings, and cite borrowed ideas accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can narrow a broad topic into a researchable question and choose sources based on authority, evidence, date, and relevance. Their final response combines findings from several sources, explains connections, and uses accurate citations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first search result as reliable or confuse popularity with credibility. They may copy wording while calling it a paraphrase, collect facts without connecting them, or omit citations for borrowed ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short source excerpts. Ask them to choose the strongest source, explain why, and write one cited paraphrase that answers a focused question.

Ways to Teach It
Place printed source cards around the room, then have groups sort them by credibility and label the evidence behind each choice.
Ask students to write: When two credible sources disagree, how should a researcher decide what to include?
Run a paraphrase relay where teams rewrite short passages without copying phrasing, then check meaning and citation accuracy.
Have students research a local school issue and prepare a one-page recommendation using evidence from three credible sources.
