MathGrades 9–12Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Expressions

The standard

Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics · High School — Algebra

What this standard means

Students need to add, subtract, and multiply polynomial expressions accurately. They should combine like terms, apply the distributive property, organize work by degree, and recognize that polynomial operations work much like whole number operations with variables attached.

Mastery looks like clean, flexible work with binomials, trinomials, and higher degree expressions, including products such as (2x - 3)(x^2 + 4x - 1). Students often get stuck with sign errors, missing terms when multiplying, and treating unlike terms as if they can be combined.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on activity: Give students algebra tiles to model (x + 2)(x + 3), then sketch the tile model and write the product.
  • Discussion or writing prompt: Ask students to explain why 3x^2 + 5x cannot be combined into 8x^3.
  • Quick assessment: Post three polynomial sums and two products, then have students circle one possible sign error before simplifying.
  • Real-world connection: Use area of a rectangular garden with side lengths x + 4 and 2x - 1 to write and simplify a polynomial area expression.
