The standard

Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to know what the Pythagorean Theorem says, when it applies, and how to use it to find a missing side length in a right triangle. They should also use it on the coordinate plane to find the distance between two points.

Mastery looks like choosing the right legs and hypotenuse, setting up a² + b² = c² correctly, and explaining why the answer makes sense. Students often mix up the hypotenuse, forget to square or square root, or try to use the theorem on triangles that are not right triangles.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on activity: Give students grid paper, rulers, and right-triangle cutouts to measure sides, square lengths, and test a² + b² = c².
  • Discussion prompt: Ask, “How can you tell which side is c before doing any calculations?” using three labeled triangle examples.
  • Quick assessment: Show a right triangle with legs 6 and 8, then ask students to find the hypotenuse and explain one step.
  • Real-world connection: Have students calculate the shortest ladder length needed to reach a 12-foot window when the ladder base is 5 feet from the wall.
