Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to find factor pairs for numbers from 1 to 100 and see multiplication as a way to build numbers. They also need to list multiples of a whole number and notice patterns, such as even numbers, skip-counting, and repeated products.

Mastery looks like a student explaining why 24 has factors 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24, then using that thinking with new numbers. Students often mix up factors and multiples, stop searching too soon, or think larger numbers must have more factors.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs of students 24 counters and ask them to build every possible equal-row array, then record the factor pairs.
  • Ask students to write: How are factors and multiples different, and how can multiplication facts help you find each one?
  • Show the number 36 and have students list all factor pairs on a sticky note in two minutes.
  • Use grocery pack sizes, like 6 muffins per box, to list multiples needed for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 boxes.
