The Standard

Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas clearly and efficiently.

What This Standard Means

Students need to use digital tools to create, revise, and share writing in subjects like science, history, and technical classes. They should be able to type, organize information, add helpful visuals or links, and make choices that help readers see how ideas connect.

Mastery looks like a clear digital product, such as a short report, slide deck, infographic, or shared document, where the layout supports the thinking. Students often get stuck by decorating instead of clarifying, pasting too much from sources, or using technology features without a purpose.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students turn a short science explanation into a one-page Google Doc with headings, a table, and one labeled image.
  • Ask students to explain which digital feature, such as a chart or hyperlink, best helps a reader understand their topic.
  • Use a two-minute check where students highlight one place their layout shows a clear relationship between ideas.
  • Show a city website or weather dashboard, then have students identify how design helps people compare information quickly.
