What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students shape an explanation or argument for a specific reader and goal. They organize ideas logically, choose a fitting tone, and revise unclear or off-topic parts.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can turn the same source material into a lab explanation, museum caption, or formal claim. Each version has a clear focus, logical order, useful details, and language suited to its reader.

Common Misconceptions

Students may include accurate facts but arrange them in a confusing order. They may use the same tone for every reader or mistake formal writing for long sentences and difficult words.

How to Assess It

Give students four facts about plastic waste. Ask them to write a six-sentence explanation for fifth graders, with a clear opening, logical order, and suitable word choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups mixed-up paragraphs from a science explanation, then have them arrange, tape, and annotate the order they chose.

  2. Ask students to rewrite a textbook paragraph for a younger student, then explain which words and details they changed.

  3. Play Audience Switch by drawing task and reader cards, then writing three-sentence responses that classmates identify from style clues.

  4. Have students turn local weather data into a brief advisory for families, using clear headings, selected facts, and direct language.
