What This Standard Means
Students need to shape their writing to fit the job. A lab explanation should sound different from a historical argument or a set of directions. They need a clear point, logical order, enough detail, and word choices that fit the reader.
Mastery looks like a piece that is easy to follow and matches the assignment. The purpose is clear from the start, each part belongs, and the tone fits. Students often get stuck by listing facts with no plan, using casual language, or writing for the teacher instead of the intended audience.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students three mixed-up paragraphs from a science explanation and have them cut, sort, and label the best order with reasons.
- Ask students to rewrite the same claim for a principal, a younger student, and a museum visitor, then explain what changed.
- Use a 5-minute exit check where students underline their main point, circle one audience clue, and box one transition.
- Show a public safety poster, lab report excerpt, and news article, then have students name the purpose, audience, and style of each.
