What This Standard Means
Kindergarten students need practice using simple digital tools to make and share writing. They may type letters or words, record their voice, add a drawing, choose a photo, or work with a partner on one shared piece. Adult support is expected.
Mastery looks like a child using a tool for a real writing purpose, such as labeling a picture, telling a story, or adding a sentence with help. Students often get stuck on logging in, finding keys, spacing, saving work, taking turns, and remembering that the writing still needs to make sense.
Ways to Teach It
- Have pairs use a tablet drawing app to draw a class pet, type one label, and record one sentence about it.
- Ask, “How did the computer help your writing today?” and have students answer with a partner before sharing.
- Give students a prepared slide and ask them to add their name, one picture, and one word label.
- Show a simple classroom newsletter and explain how writers use computers to share messages with families.
