CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.6
The Standard
With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

What This Standard Means
First graders need to use simple technology to make writing readable and shareable. They may type a sentence, add a picture, record their voice, or work with a partner on one class device. Adult support is expected, so the goal is not independent tech use yet.
Mastery looks like a student helping create a digital piece that has words, matches the topic, and can be shared with others. Students often get stuck logging in, finding keys, spacing words, or focusing more on pictures and buttons than the writing itself.
Ways to Teach It
- Have partners type one sentence from their paper draft into a class document, then add a matching photo or drawing.
- Ask, "How did the computer help your reader understand your writing better?" and have students answer orally or in one sentence.
- Give students a checklist: typed words, spaces, capital letter, end mark, picture matches, name included.
- Show a simple class newsletter or school website post, then have students help publish one shared sentence about a class event.
