What This Standard Means
Students need to use digital tools to draft, revise, publish, and share writing. They should be able to work in a shared document, leave useful comments, respond to feedback, and manage basic online research and publishing steps. They also need enough typing fluency to produce about three pages in one sitting.
Mastery looks like a student who can open a document, format it clearly, type at a steady pace, save and share it, and collaborate without taking over or going off task. Students often get stuck with file management, vague comments like “good job,” slow keyboarding, and copying online text instead of using their own words.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students co-write a one-page class survival guide in shared documents, with each pair responsible for one section and one image credit.
- Ask students to comment on a partner’s draft using two prompts: “One sentence that works is...” and “One place I got confused is...”
- Give a ten-minute typing check where students copy a clean paragraph, then record words typed, errors, and one keyboarding goal.
- Show a school newsletter or class website, then have students publish a polished book review for a real sixth-grade audience.
