Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.

What This Standard Means
Students need to choose or receive a focused topic, ask simple research questions, gather facts from a few sources, and use those facts to create a short written piece or presentation. They should learn to record information in their own words, not copy full sentences.
Mastery looks like a clear topic, 2 or 3 useful questions, facts from more than one source, and a final product that teaches the reader something. Students often get stuck making questions too broad, copying from books or websites, or adding fun facts that do not match the topic.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students use two library books and one approved website to fill a three-column fact chart about an animal, place, or invention.
- Ask students to write: What do I want to find out, and which facts helped me answer that question?
- Give students a sticky note exit ticket: write one research question and one fact that answers it.
- Connect to real life by having students research a school issue, like playground games, then share one suggestion with the class.
