What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and reshape drafts to match a clear goal and audience. They make major changes when needed, then edit wording, grammar, usage, and mechanics.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify the biggest weakness in a draft and choose a revision that fits the purpose and reader. They can reorganize, replace, cut, or expand content, then correct sentence-level errors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat revision as fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may add more words without improving focus, keep every idea, or change tone without considering the intended reader.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a weak paragraph written for a school board audience. Ask them to rewrite it and name the change that most improves its impact.

Ways to Teach It
Give students a printed draft, three highlighters, and scissors; they mark claims, evidence, and commentary, then cut and reorder weak sections.
Students answer the prompt, “Which change would most help this draft’s intended reader, and why?” using one passage and a proposed revision.
Run a revision relay where teams rotate through drafts, making one focused change to organization, evidence, clarity, or conventions at each stop.
Students rewrite one school announcement for classmates and families, changing tone, details, and organization for each audience.
