CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.5
The Standard
Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience.

What This Standard Means
Students need to treat writing as a process, not a one-time draft. They should plan with a purpose and audience in mind, revise for meaning and structure, edit for correctness, and be willing to rewrite or change direction when the piece is not working.
Mastery looks like a student making smart choices, not just fixing commas. Strong writers can explain why they cut a paragraph, reordered evidence, changed tone, or rewrote an introduction. Students often get stuck by equating revision with proofreading, taking feedback personally, or making surface changes while leaving weak ideas in place.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a printed draft and three colored pens to mark one cut, one move, and one place needing stronger evidence.
- Ask students to write a revision note explaining which change most improved the piece for its intended audience and why.
- Collect before-and-after thesis statements and have students label the specific improvement in focus, precision, or arguability.
- Show a college application essay or workplace email revision, then identify changes made for audience, tone, and purpose.
