CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.3a
The Standard
Engage and orient the reader by setting out a problem, situation, or observation and its significance, establishing one or multiple point(s) of view, and introducing a narrator and/or characters; create a smooth progression of experiences or events.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to open a narrative in a way that gives readers a reason to keep reading. They should establish the situation, show why it matters, introduce the narrator or characters, and make the point of view clear. The opening should also set up events so the story can move forward without confusion.
Mastery looks like an opening that feels purposeful, grounded, and easy to follow. Students often get stuck by starting too generally, hiding the conflict too long, switching point of view without control, or listing background facts instead of creating a scene.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on activity: Give students three bland story openings and have them revise one by adding a problem, narrator, setting, and first event.
- Discussion or writing prompt: Ask, "What does the reader need to know in the first page, and what can wait?"
- Quick assessment: Have students highlight the problem, point of view, narrator or characters, and first event in their own opening paragraph.
- Real-world connection: Compare the first minute of a film trailer with a story opening and identify how both orient the audience.
