What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students produce both quick pieces and longer projects on a regular basis. They plan, draft, research, reflect, and revise as needed for different tasks, purposes, and readers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students complete focused writing in one sitting and sustain longer pieces through research, drafting, feedback, and revision. They adjust content, tone, and structure for the assigned purpose and audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat first drafts as finished work or assume every piece needs the same amount of planning. They may ignore audience and use the same tone, detail, and format for every task.
How to Assess It
- Give a 10-minute exit ticket: “Explain a school rule to a new student, using a helpful tone and one clear example.” Check focus, audience awareness, and completion.

Have students sort sample writing tasks by likely time frame, audience, and purpose, then choose one and draft a response.
Ask students to explain how they would change a message about late work for a friend, teacher, and principal.
Play a writing sprint game with three five-minute rounds: describe, explain, and argue about the same classroom object.
Students write a short customer complaint, then expand it over several days using research, feedback, and revision.
