What This Standard Means
Students need to write often in both quick and longer formats. They should be able to plan, draft, revise, and edit when time allows, but also produce clear writing in one class period. They need to shift purpose and tone for different audiences, such as peers, teachers, employers, or public readers.
Mastery looks like steady writing habits, not one polished essay. Students can meet a prompt, manage time, use feedback, revise meaningfully, and adjust style to fit the task. They often get stuck starting, sustaining a longer piece, or treating revision as spell-check only.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students keep a weekly writing folder with one quickwrite, one revised paragraph, and one longer draft in progress.
- Ask students to rewrite the same argument for a principal, a friend, and a local newspaper, then compare tone choices.
- Collect a five-minute exit response explaining what they changed in today’s draft and why that change improved the writing.
- Bring in job applications, college prompts, complaint emails, and op-eds, then have students match each to audience and purpose.
