CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.7
The Standard
Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of "how-to" books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards
What This Standard Means
First graders need to work with classmates to learn about one focused topic, gather facts from a few sources, and help create a shared piece of writing. The class might read several books about planting seeds, then write steps for how to plant one.
Mastery looks like students naming what they learned, adding one useful fact or step, listening to others, and helping organize the writing. Many students get stuck copying whole sentences, sharing unrelated facts, or putting steps out of order. They need modeling for using pictures, labels, sticky notes, and simple sentence frames.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on activity: Read three simple books about making a sandwich, then have teams sequence picture cards and help write class directions.
- Discussion or writing prompt: Ask, “What did we learn from the books that would help someone do this correctly?”
- Quick assessment: Give each student a sticky note to draw or write one fact or step for the shared class chart.
- Real-world connection: Use a school routine, like washing hands or packing a backpack, to research, discuss, and write clear class instructions.
