Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Speaking and Listening Standards
What This Standard Means
Students need to use a picture, object, chart, or simple visual to add more detail when they tell about something. They should understand that the visual is not separate from their speaking. It helps the listener know more about the topic.
Mastery looks like a child showing a drawing and using it while talking, such as pointing to parts and adding details aloud. Many students get stuck by holding up a picture without explaining it, drawing unrelated details, or saying only labels instead of full ideas.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a real leaf, have them draw it, then tell a partner three details using their drawing. Each child explains one added detail.
- Prompt students, “What does your picture show that your words did not say yet?” after they share a drawing about a favorite place.
- Ask each student to show a drawing of an animal and say one detail they can point to in the picture.
- Show a simple weather report picture and have students add a sun, cloud, or umbrella before describing today’s weather.
