Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text.

What This Standard Means

Kindergarteners need to notice when a story word is new or confusing. They should ask what it means, listen for clues in the sentence or picture, and try a kid-friendly meaning that fits the story.

Mastery looks like a child stopping at a word like "enormous," asking about it, using the illustration or sentence, and explaining it as "really big." Students often get stuck pretending they know, repeating the word without meaning, or guessing from the picture only when the sentence says something different.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on: Give pairs picture cards and story sentence strips, then have them match each unknown word to a likely meaning card.
  • Prompt: After a read-aloud, ask, "Which word was tricky, and what helped you figure it out?"
  • Quick assessment: Read one page aloud, circle a challenging word, and ask each child to explain it using the picture or sentence.
  • Real-world connection: During snack or recess, point out words like "crunchy" or "shady" and ask children what clues explain them.
