Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies 6—12
What This Standard Means
Students need steady practice reading history and social studies texts that are written for middle school readers. They should handle textbook sections, primary sources, maps with captions, timelines, speeches, articles, and short essays. They need to track main ideas, use context for hard words, notice author point of view, and connect details across paragraphs.
Mastery looks like reading a new grade-level passage without heavy teacher support, then explaining what it says with accurate evidence. Students often get stuck on dense sentences, unfamiliar events, domain words, and primary source language. They may also summarize too broadly or copy lines without showing understanding.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a short textbook passage and a primary source excerpt on the same event, then have them annotate claims, dates, and key details.
- Ask students to write: What did the author want readers to believe, and which two details show that purpose?
- Use a five-minute exit ticket with one new paragraph, three vocabulary-in-context questions, and one main idea sentence.
- Bring in a current news article about a local policy issue and compare its structure to a history textbook section.
