What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students independently read grade-level history and social studies texts with steady understanding. They use context, text structure, source details, and reference tools to handle difficult sections.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read an unfamiliar, grade-level history text without step-by-step teacher support. They explain its main ideas, use details accurately, and apply context or text features when meaning breaks down.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every unfamiliar word as a reason to stop reading. They may also skim headings, captions, dates, and source information, or confuse finishing a text with understanding it.

How to Assess It

Give students a one-page history passage and ask them to state the main idea, cite two supporting details, and explain one unfamiliar term.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a short textbook section, sticky notes, and highlighters to mark main ideas, supporting details, unfamiliar terms, and helpful text features.

  2. Ask students to write which reading strategy helped most with a difficult paragraph and support their choice with a specific example.

  3. Run a strategy match game where students pair reading problems, such as an unknown term, with useful responses, such as checking context.

  4. Have students read a local news article about a public issue, then summarize its background and identify details needed to understand the issue.
