ELA7th GradeKnowledge of Language

The Standard

Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Language Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to adjust language choices for purpose, audience, and situation. They should notice how sentence structure, word choice, tone, and conventions affect meaning in writing, speaking, reading, and listening.

Mastery looks like a student revising a sentence to sound more formal, clearer, or more precise, and explaining why the change works. Students often get stuck by thinking grammar is only about correctness. They may also use the same tone for a text message, a speech, and an essay.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students a bland paragraph and have them revise it for a principal, a friend, and a contest judge.
  • Ask: How would you change your words if your audience were a kindergartner, a coach, or a school board member?
  • Show three revised versions of one sentence and ask students to choose the clearest one and explain their choice.
  • Bring in a school announcement and have students rewrite it as a social media post, formal letter, and hallway poster.
