What Students Need to Do: Students make language choices that match their purpose, audience, and situation. They use conventions to make ideas clear, precise, and concise when communicating or interpreting a message.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose words that fit the audience, purpose, and setting. They revise vague, wordy, or repetitive language while keeping the intended meaning and tone.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think longer sentences always sound more mature. They may remove useful details when cutting repetition, or use casual language in a formal setting.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “The two twins repeated the same answer again.” Ask students to revise it and explain one language choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs sentence strips with wordy phrases, then have them cut unnecessary words and rebuild each sentence without changing its meaning.
Ask students to rewrite the same request for a friend, a teacher, and the principal, then explain how their language changed.
Play a revision relay where teams replace vague words, remove repetition, and shorten sentences while preserving meaning.
Compare a text message and a school email about the same problem, then identify which language choices suit each audience.
