CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.4.4a

ELA4th GradeVocabulary Acquisition and Use

The Standard

Use context (e.g., definitions, examples, or restatements in text) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to figure out an unknown word or phrase by using nearby words and sentences. They should notice when the author gives a definition, an example, or says the idea again in a simpler way.

Mastery looks like a student underlining the clue, naming the clue type, and giving a reasonable meaning that fits the sentence. Students often grab a random nearby word, skip the clue, or choose a meaning that sounds right but does not fit the passage.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs short passages with one bold word, then have them highlight the definition, example, or restatement that helps explain it.
  • Ask students to write: What clue helped you figure out the word, and how do you know your meaning fits?
  • Show one sentence with an unknown word and ask students to circle the clue, label its type, and write the meaning.
  • Use a menu, sports article, or game instructions and have students find one unfamiliar word they can solve from context.
