What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word or phrase by reading the words and sentences around it. They identify the clue and explain how it supports their inference.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can infer a reasonable meaning for an unfamiliar word in a short passage. They point to a definition, example, or restatement that supports their answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from one familiar word instead of reading the whole sentence. They may also treat any nearby detail as proof, even when it does not support the inferred meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “The path was treacherous, with loose rocks, steep drops, and slippery mud.” Students define “treacherous” and underline two supporting clues.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with bold words; students highlight nearby clues, infer each meaning, then sort strips as definition, example, or restatement.
Read the sentence “Mina was famished, or extremely hungry, after practice,” then ask students to name the clue and explain their inference.
Play Context Clue Relay: teams read a sentence card, write the unknown word’s meaning, and circle the clue before passing the marker.
Have students examine a school menu or announcement, choose one unfamiliar word, and use surrounding details to explain its likely meaning.
