What This Standard Means

Students need to pick up new words from talk, read alouds, shared reading, and text responses, then use those words when they speak and write. They also need to use simple joining words, such as because, and, but, so, to connect ideas clearly.

Mastery sounds like a student explaining an answer with a new word from the book, or writing, “I was tired because I ran.” Students often repeat words without knowing them, leave out the connecting word, or use because without giving a real reason.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on: Give partners picture cards and word cards, then have them build oral sentences using because, and, but, or so.
  • Prompt: After a read aloud, ask, “Which new word can you use to tell about the character, and why?”
  • Quick assessment: Show two simple clauses and ask students to join them with because, then read the sentence aloud.
  • Real-world connection: During snack or cleanup, have students explain choices using because, such as “I need a napkin because my hands are sticky.”
