What This Standard Means

Students need to pick up new words from talk, read alouds, independent reading, and text responses, then use those words in their own speaking and writing. They also need to use describing words well, especially adjectives for nouns and adverbs for actions.

Mastery looks like a child saying or writing a clear sentence such as, “The tiny dog barked loudly,” and choosing words that fit the meaning. Students often get stuck using vague words like nice, good, bad, or fun. They may also mix up adjectives and adverbs, or add a fancy word that does not quite make sense.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on activity: Give pairs picture cards and word cards, then have them build sentences using one adjective and one adverb.
  • Prompt: After a read aloud, ask, “Which new word should our class try today, and where could we use it?”
  • Quick assessment: Ask students to revise “The cat ran” by adding one adjective and one adverb that make sense.
  • Real-world connection: During cleanup, line-up, or snack, challenge students to describe actions with adverbs like carefully, quietly, quickly, or politely.
