What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use measurements, observations, and patterns from an investigation to explain what happened. They make a reasonable inference and identify the evidence behind it. They also check whether another conclusion fits the data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a clear claim, cites specific results, and explains how those results support the claim. When shown a classmate's explanation, the student can identify missing, weak, or unrelated evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a guess or opinion as evidence. They may list numbers without explaining what the numbers show. They may also choose only the results that support their claim and ignore conflicting results.
How to Assess It
- Give students these results: a car traveled 42 cm from a 10 cm ramp, 78 cm from a 20 cm ramp, and 121 cm from a 30 cm ramp. Ask them to explain the pattern and critique the claim, “Ramp height has no effect on distance.”

Ways to Teach It
Roll toy cars down three ramp heights, measure each distance, and write one claim supported by two results.
Show two explanations for the same class data and ask students which is stronger, then underline the evidence that supports their choice.
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claim cards with measurement, observation, or pattern cards that support each claim.
Compare three days of weather observations with forecasts, then explain which recorded patterns could help predict the next day's weather.
