What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare quantities up to 30 with the benchmark numbers 5 and 10. They use models and describe each comparison as greater than, less than, or equal to.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students build or identify a quantity and compare it with 5 or 10. They correctly say greater than, less than, or equal to and use the model to explain why.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think spread-out counters show more than counters placed close together. They may mix up greater than and less than, or think equal groups must look identical.
How to Assess It
- Show 8 on a ten frame. Ask students to complete: 8 is ___ 5, and 8 is ___ 10.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student a numeral card from 0 to 30 to build on ten frames, then compare the quantity with 5 and 10.
Display 7 beads and ask, "How do you know 7 is greater than 5 but less than 10?"
Play Benchmark Sort by placing numeral cards into groups labeled less than 5, equal to 5, between 5 and 10, and 10 or more.
Show pictures of egg cartons with different numbers of eggs, then have students compare each amount with 5 and 10.
