What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count forward by ones while placing counters in five-frames and ten-frames. They move along number paths, matching each spoken number to one space.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place one counter for each number they say and fill frame spaces in order. They move one space at a time on a number path and name the next number correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may skip or repeat number words, or move a counter without saying one number. They may fill frame spaces randomly or jump over numbers on a number path.
How to Assess It
- Give each child a ten-frame, nine counters, and a 1–10 number path. Say, “Show 9 as you count forward by ones on both tools.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students place toy animals into five-frames and ten-frames, saying one number for each animal added.
Ask, “How do the ten-frame and number path both show counting forward?” Record student ideas beside simple drawings.
Partners roll a number cube, place that many counters, then add one counter and say the new total.
Count classroom items, such as chairs or lunch boxes, then mark each count on a large floor number path.
