Virginia SOL 2.NS.1.b
The Standard
Represent forward counting patterns created when counting by groups of 5s, 10s, and 25s starting at various multiples up to at least 200 using a variety of tools (e.g., objects, number lines, hundreds charts).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will utilize flexible counting strategies to determine and describe quantities up to 200.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count forward by equal groups of 5, 10, or 25 from different valid starting numbers. They represent each sequence with objects, number lines, or number charts through 200.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately build and extend sequences by 5, 10, or 25 from a given multiple. They show the pattern with objects, a number line, or a hundreds chart and explain what changes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may always begin at zero, switch the size of the count, or include numbers between counts. They may also struggle when a sequence crosses 100.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank number line and ask: “Start at 75 and count by 25s to 200. Mark and label each number.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters grouped in 5s, 10s, or 25s, then have them build and label sequences from a selected starting multiple.
Ask students to explain in writing how they know the next three numbers after 65 when counting by 5s.
Play Sequence Relay: teams draw a start card and count-size card, then take turns writing correct numbers up to 200.
Use play coins to count amounts by nickels, dimes, and quarters, starting with an amount already in the cash register.
