What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count forward by twos from different even starting numbers through at least 50. They show the pattern with objects, jumps on a number line, or marked cells on a hundreds chart.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can start at an even number such as 8 and count forward by twos without errors. The student can show that each number is 2 more using objects, a number line, or a hundreds chart.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may restart at 2 instead of continuing from 8 or 14. They may add 1, include odd numbers, or skip an even number.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Start at 14. Show six forward jumps of 2 on a number line, then write every number you land on.

Ways to Teach It
Give each pair 30 counters; start with 8, add two counters at a time, and record each new total through 30.
Students compare sequences starting at 6 and 12, then write two ways they are alike or different.
Play Chart Chase: call an even start, and students cover the next six numbers by moving two spaces at a time on a hundreds chart.
Count classroom supplies packed in pairs, such as shoes or gloves, and label the running totals as each pair is added.
