Virginia SOL K.MG.2.e
The Standard
Compare and contrast two plane figures using characteristics to describe similarities and differences.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, name, compare, and construct plane figures (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine two flat shapes and explain what is alike and different. They use features such as straight sides, curved edges, and corners.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name visible features of each shape, such as straight sides, curved edges, and corners. The student states at least one accurate similarity and one accurate difference.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may focus on color, size, or position instead of sides and corners. They may think a turned square is no longer a square or that every four-sided shape is a square. Some may count a circle's curved edge as a straight side.
How to Assess It
- Show a triangle and a square. Ask, “Tell one way these shapes are alike and one way they are different, using sides or corners.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students pattern blocks and a two-circle sorting mat to place shared features in the overlap and different features outside it.
Display a square and rectangle, then ask, “What do you notice about their sides and corners?” Record students’ comparisons.
Play Shape Match-Up by having students draw two shape cards and earn a point for naming one similarity and one difference.
Take a classroom shape hunt, then compare two found objects, such as a clock and window, by their flat-shape features.
