What Students Need to Do
- Students find how many more are needed to make a total of 10. They show the two parts with objects, drawings, fingers, or numbers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use counters, fingers, drawings, or a ten-frame to find the missing part. The student names the correct amount and can show that both parts total 10.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the starting amount again and give an answer that is one too many. They may also think zero cannot be the missing part when the starting number is already 10.
How to Assess It
- Give each student the prompt, “You have 6 counters. Draw more counters to make 10. How many did you add?”

Give students ten-frames and counters, then call out a starting number and have them fill the empty spaces to make 10.
Ask, “Mia has 7 apples and needs 10. How many more does she need?” Students draw and explain their thinking.
Play Make Ten Match by pairing numeral cards from 0 to 10 whose values combine to make 10.
Set up a carton with 10 egg spaces, fill some with plastic eggs, and ask students how many spaces remain.
