What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the missing part needed to complete a group of five. They show their thinking with objects, fingers, drawings, words, or a number sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student quickly finds the missing part for any starting number from 0 through 5. The student can prove the answer with counters, fingers, a drawing, or an equation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the given group again instead of counting how many more are needed. They may also name 5 as the missing part or reverse the given part and missing part.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a card showing 3 and five counters. Ask, “How many more counters make 5?” and have students draw or write 3 + __ = 5.

Ask, “You have 2 apples and need 5. How many more apples do you need?” Students draw and explain.
Play Make Five Match by pairing number cards such as 1 and 4, 2 and 3, or 0 and 5.
Set five plates for snack, place spoons beside some plates, and ask students how many more spoons are needed.
