Virginia SOL 8.PFA.3.f
The Standard
Create a context for a linear function given a graph, table, or equation in the form y = mx + b.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will represent and solve problems, including those in context, by using linear functions and analyzing their key characteristics (the value of the y-intercept (b) and the coordinates of the ordered pairs in graphs will be limited to integers).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide what the input and output represent, then invent a situation with the correct starting amount and rate of change. They include units and realistic limits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a believable situation that matches the initial value and the change per unit. The student defines each variable, uses correct units, and explains any reasonable limits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the intercept as the change per unit or swap the meanings of x and y. They may ignore units, invent an unrealistic situation, or overlook a negative rate.
How to Assess It
- Give students y = 3x + 8. Ask them to write a matching situation, define both variables, include units, and explain what 3 and 8 mean.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups cups and counters to model a starting amount plus equal additions, then write a story matching their model.
Show y = -2x + 18 and ask students to write and defend a context where both values make sense.
Play a card sort matching graphs, tables, equations, and situation cards, then have students revise one mismatched situation.
Use a taxi fare with a fixed pickup fee and charge per mile, then label the variables, units, slope, and intercept.
