What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret the variable, numbers, operation, and equal sign in an equation. They write a believable situation where the quantities and relationship match every part of the equation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a realistic situation that matches the operation and equality exactly. The student names the unknown, assigns sensible units, and can show how each part of the equation appears in the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse division, so x ÷ 4 = 6 becomes 4 ÷ x = 6 in their story. They may also mismatch operations, omit what the variable represents, or use quantities with incompatible units.
How to Assess It
- Give students 3x = 24 and ask: “Write a two-sentence situation. State what x, 3, and 24 represent.”

Ways to Teach It
Build 4x = 20 with cups and counters, then have students write a matching story and define x.
Compare two stories for x − 5 = 12, discuss which one matches, and revise the other story.
Give teams equation and story cards to match, then award a point when they explain each match correctly.
Use 5x = 30 to write a store purchase situation, naming the item price, quantity, and total cost.
