Virginia SOL 8.NS.2.a
The Standard
Describe and illustrate the relationships among the subsets of the real number system by using representations (e.g., graphic organizers, number lines). Subsets include rational numbers, irrational numbers, integers, whole numbers, and natural numbers.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will investigate and describe the relationship between the subsets of the real number system.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students classify natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers. They show how the sets fit together in a nested diagram and locate examples on a number line.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify numbers into every set that applies. They can draw a nested diagram and use examples to explain why integers are rational but irrational numbers are not.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often place a number in only one set instead of every set that contains it. They may think all square roots are irrational, all decimals are rational, or zero is a natural number.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Classify -4, 0, 3/5, √16, and √7 into every set that applies, then plot √7 on a number line.

Ways to Teach It
Place labeled hoops on the floor and have students sort number cards into nested sets, explaining each placement to a partner.
Ask students to write why √36 and √10 belong to different subsets, even though both are written as square roots.
Play subset bingo using cards with numbers while calling clues such as rational but not integer or whole but not natural.
Examine temperatures, bank balances, measurements, and circle calculations, then identify which real number subsets appear in each context.
