The Standard

Identify the parts of a right triangle (the hypotenuse and the legs) given figures in various orientations.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems involving right triangles, including those in context.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate the right angle in any right triangle. They name the two sides forming that angle as legs and the opposite side as the hypotenuse.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly label the hypotenuse as the side opposite the right angle. They identify the two sides forming the right angle as the legs, even when the triangle is rotated or reflected.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the longest-looking side instead of finding the side opposite the right angle. They may also think a leg must be horizontal or vertical.

How to Assess It

Show three right triangles in different orientations. Ask students to circle each hypotenuse, label both legs, and explain one choice using the right-angle marker.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs paper triangles to rotate, then have them mark the right angle, trace the legs, and circle the hypotenuse.

  2. Display a tilted right triangle and ask, “How can you identify the hypotenuse without relying on how the triangle looks?”

  3. Play a quick sorting game with triangle cards, labeling each side as a leg, hypotenuse, or neither.

  4. Use a ladder leaning against a wall and have students identify which lengths represent the legs and hypotenuse.
