What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine which of two integers is greater, less, or equal. They use <, >, and = correctly and justify comparisons with a number line or context.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given positive integers, negative integers, and zero, students write a true comparison statement. They explain that numbers farther right on a number line are greater.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think -8 is greater than -3 because 8 is greater than 3. They may reverse < and > or treat zero as negative. Some compare absolute values instead of positions on a number line.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Fill in <, >, or = for -7 __ -2, 0 __ -5, and -4 __ -4. Explain one answer using a number line.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place integer cards on a taped floor number line, then pair cards and stand between them holding the correct comparison symbol.

  2. Write and discuss: Which is greater, -6 or -2, and how can a number line prove your claim?

  3. Play Integer War: partners flip two integer cards, place the correct symbol between them, and keep the pair for a correct explanation.

  4. Compare morning temperatures from four cities, then write true statements using <, >, or = and explain what each statement means.
