Virginia SOL 5.CE.4.b
The Standard
Given a whole number numerical expression involving more than one operation, describe which operation is completed first, which is second, and which is third.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will simplify numerical expressions with whole numbers using the order of operations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine an expression before calculating and decide the order in which its operations should be completed. They explain the sequence using parentheses, operation priority, and left-to-right rules.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student labels each operation in the correct sequence before calculating. They handle parentheses first, then multiplication and division from left to right, followed by addition and subtraction from left to right.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may work strictly from left to right, even when addition appears before multiplication. Others think multiplication always comes before division, or addition before subtraction, instead of working left to right within each pair. Some overlook parentheses.
How to Assess It
- Give students 24 ÷ 6 + 3 × 5. Ask them to label the operations 1, 2, and 3, then explain their order in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs expression strips and three numbered sticky notes; students place notes over operations to show the sequence, then simplify.
Ask why division comes before multiplication in 24 ÷ 6 + 3 × 5, then have students write and compare explanations.
Play an operations relay where teams sequence operation cards for each projected expression before calculating the value.
Model a snack order with 3 × $4 + 2 × $5; students label the calculation sequence and find the total.
