Virginia SOL 4.NS.3.c
The Standard
Use benchmarks (e.g., 0, 1 2 , or 1) to compare and order no more than four fractions (proper or improper), and/or mixed numbers, with like and unlike denominators of 12 or less. Justify comparisons orally, in writing, or with a model.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use mathematical reasoning and justification to represent, compare, and order fractions (proper, improper, and mixed numbers with denominators 12 or less), with and without models.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare and order up to four proper fractions, improper fractions, or mixed numbers. They use familiar benchmarks such as 0, ½, and 1, then explain their reasoning with words, numbers, or models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly order proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers with different denominators. They explain each placement by comparing values to 0, ½, 1, or another whole number.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a larger denominator means a larger fraction, or compare numerators without considering the whole. They may also place every improper fraction after every mixed number or use ½ as a benchmark inaccurately.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to order 5/12, 7/8, 1 1/6, and 11/6 from least to greatest. Require one written justification using 0, ½, or 1.

Ways to Teach It
Use fraction strips to place 3/8, 7/12, 5/6, and 4/3 beneath benchmark cards labeled 0, ½, 1, and beyond 1.
Ask, "Which is closer to 1, 7/8 or 9/10?" Students write a claim and support it with benchmark distances.
Play Benchmark Sort: partners draw four fraction cards, order them, then earn a point only after both explain each placement.
Compare recipe amounts such as 3/4 cup, 5/8 cup, and 1 1/4 cups, then order them from least to greatest.
