Virginia SOL 4.NS.3.b
The Standard
Compare and order no more than four fractions (proper or improper), and/or mixed numbers, with like numerators and unlike denominators by comparing the size of the parts using fractions with denominators of 12 or less (e.g., 3 8 < 3 5 ). Justify comparisons orally, in writing, or with a model.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will use mathematical reasoning and justification to represent, compare, and order fractions (proper, improper, and mixed numbers with denominators 12 or less), with and without models.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare fractions with the same numerator by reasoning about the size of each part. They order up to four values and justify the order with words, symbols, or models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly compare and order up to four fractions or mixed numbers. They explain that, with equal numerators, smaller denominators create larger parts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a larger denominator makes a larger fraction. They may compare denominators without checking that the numerators match. They may overlook whole-number parts in mixed numbers.
How to Assess It
- Order 5/4, 5/6, 5/8, and 5/12 from least to greatest. Justify your answer with words or a model.

Ways to Teach It
Build 3/4, 3/6, 3/8, and 3/12 with fraction strips, then place the models from least to greatest.
Write a response to this prompt: Why is 7/9 greater than 7/12 even though 12 is greater than 9?
Draw one numerator card and four denominator cards, make four fractions, then earn a point by ordering and explaining them correctly.
Compare equal numbers of slices from differently cut sandwiches, then decide which serving gives the most food and explain why.
