Virginia SOL 6.NS.1.e
The Standard
Use multiple strategies (e.g., benchmarks, number line, equivalency) to compare and order no more than four positive rational numbers expressed as fractions (proper or improper), mixed numbers, decimals, and percents (decimals through thousandths, fractions with denominators of 12 or less or factors of 100) with and without models. Justify solutions orally, in writing or with a model. Ordering may be in ascending or descending order.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will reason and use multiple strategies to express equivalency, compare, and order numbers written as fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percents.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare and order up to four positive rational numbers written in different forms. They use benchmarks, number lines, or equivalent forms to justify their decisions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly arrange numbers in ascending or descending order. They use benchmarks, number lines, or equivalent forms and clearly explain why each number belongs in its position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a larger denominator makes a larger fraction. They may compare decimals by digit count or treat a percent as a whole number without converting it.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to order 5/8, 0.62, 61%, and 2/3 from least to greatest. Require two comparisons justified with different strategies.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction, decimal, percent, and mixed-number cards to place on a taped floor number line, then explain each placement.
Ask students to write which is greater, 7/8 or 86%, and justify the answer without using a calculator.
Run a card-sort race where teams order four mixed-format numbers, then earn a point only after checking another team’s reasoning.
Compare sale signs showing 1/4 off, 30% off, and 0.28 off, then rank the savings and defend the best deal.
