Virginia SOL 4.MG.5.a
The Standard
Develop definitions for parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombi, and trapezoids through the exploration of properties and attributes.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will classify and describe quadrilaterals (parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombi, and/or trapezoids) using specific properties and attributes.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine sides, angles, and parallel lines to sort quadrilaterals and build definitions. They use those properties to name shapes and explain overlapping categories.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students classify quadrilaterals from marked diagrams, measurements, or visual inspection, even when shapes are rotated. They write accurate definitions and explain why one shape may have several names.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a square is not a rectangle or rhombus. They may classify a rhombus only as a tilted diamond, or think rotating a shape changes its type.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a quadrilateral that is both a rectangle and a rhombus. Label the side and angle properties that prove your answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups quadrilateral cutouts, rulers, and right-angle templates to measure attributes, sort shapes, and write a definition for each group.
Ask students to explain in writing, “Why is every square a rectangle, but not every rectangle a square?”
Play Quadrilateral Guess Who using property cards such as four congruent sides, two pairs of parallel sides, and four right angles.
Photograph windows, tiles, signs, and tabletops, then label each quadrilateral and list the properties that support the classification.
