What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use the fact that 1 pound equals 16 ounces to convert between the two units. They choose multiplication or division to solve weight problems in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student converts 7 pounds to 112 ounces and 80 ounces to 5 pounds, showing the equation used. The student solves one-step weight problems and labels each answer correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume there are 10 or 12 ounces in a pound instead of 16. They may multiply when converting ounces to pounds or divide when converting pounds to ounces. They may also omit unit labels.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A package weighs 64 ounces. How many pounds does it weigh? Show the equation and label the answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give students 48 linking cubes labeled ounces, then have them make groups of 16 and record the number of pounds.
Ask students to explain in writing why converting 5 pounds to ounces uses multiplication rather than division.
Play a matching game with cards showing pounds, ounces, and equations, such as 4 pounds, 64 ounces, and 4 × 16.
Use grocery package labels to compare a 32-ounce bag with a 3-pound bag and decide which is heavier.
