What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate and find products when both factors have two digits. They use place value, properties, partial products, or the standard algorithm and explain why the answer is reasonable.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students estimate a reasonable range before calculating. They find an accurate product using partial products, an area model, or the standard algorithm, then use the estimate to check it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may forget one partial product or misalign place values in the standard algorithm. They may also multiply correctly but accept an unreasonable answer because they did not estimate first.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Estimate, then solve 34 × 27. Show your work and explain how your estimate supports your answer.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use base-ten blocks to build a 23 by 14 rectangle, then label and add the four partial products.

  2. Ask students to compare an area model and the standard algorithm for 42 × 36, then explain where each partial product appears.

  3. Have pairs draw four digit cards, form two two-digit factors, estimate, solve, and earn a point when both answers are reasonable and accurate.

  4. Plan ticket sales for 28 rows with 34 seats each, including an estimate and the exact number of available seats.
