Virginia SOL 3.MG.1.b.ii
The Standard
weight/mass of an object to the nearest U.S. Customary unit (pound) and metric unit (kilogram)
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will reason mathematically using standard units (U.S. Customary and metric) with appropriate tools to estimate and measure objects by length, weight/mass, and liquid volume to the nearest half or whole unit.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate an object’s weight or mass in pounds and kilograms. They use a scale and record each measurement to the nearest whole unit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make reasonable estimates using familiar objects as benchmarks. They use a scale correctly, report measurements to the nearest whole unit, and compare results with their estimates.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse pounds and kilograms or treat the numbers as interchangeable. They may read the wrong scale marks, round incorrectly, or estimate based on object size alone.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a filled backpack and a scale. Ask them to estimate, measure, and record its weight to the nearest pound and nearest kilogram.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs estimate and weigh classroom objects in pounds and kilograms, then record each result to the nearest whole unit.
Ask students to explain which is heavier, a one-kilogram bag or a one-pound bag, and how they know.
Play Scale Station Relay, where teams read pictured scales and match each measurement to the correct object card.
Compare grocery package labels showing pounds and kilograms, then weigh similar items to check whether the labels seem reasonable.
