Virginia SOL 3.CE.1.a
The Standard
Determine and justify whether an estimate or an exact answer is appropriate when solving single-step and multistep contextual problems involving addition and subtraction, where addends and minuends do not exceed 1,000.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction with whole numbers where addends and minuends do not exceed 1,000.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read a word problem and decide whether the situation calls for an exact result or a reasonable estimate. They solve using that choice and explain why the level of precision fits the problem.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify clues such as planning, checking whether there is enough, or needing a precise count. They calculate correctly, label the result as estimated or exact, and explain why that choice fits the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may always estimate large numbers or always calculate an exact answer, without considering how the answer will be used. They may report a rounded result as exact or justify their choice only by pointing to words like “about.”
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “The art room has 487 red sheets and 296 blue sheets. The teacher needs a quick idea of the total for planning. Choose an estimate or exact answer, solve, and justify your choice.”

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort scenario cards beneath Estimate and Exact headers, then solve two cards with place-value disks and explain each placement.
Ask, “When would about 700 be useful, and when could it cause a problem?” Students write and share examples.
Play Choice and Solve: teams draw a problem card, hold up Estimate or Exact, solve it, and earn points for a sound reason.
Use a mock supply order; students decide whether budgeting needs an estimate and whether checking the delivered quantity needs an exact count.
