Virginia SOL 2.MG.1.a.ii
The Standard
identifying different types of scales as instruments to measure weight
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will reason mathematically using standard units (U.S. Customary) with appropriate tools to estimate, measure, and compare objects by length, weight, and liquid volume to the nearest whole unit.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize different scales as tools used to measure weight. They explain what each scale is for and how to place an object on it correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify balance, kitchen, bathroom, and other scales as tools for measuring weight. They choose a suitable scale for an object and explain how to place and read it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a ruler or measuring cup to find weight. They may also think every scale works the same way or confuse weight with an object’s size.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a ruler, measuring cup, balance scale, and bathroom scale. Ask students to circle tools that measure weight and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Set out classroom scales and safe objects, then have students place each object correctly and observe how the scale shows weight.
Ask, “Which scale would you use to weigh an apple, a backpack, and yourself, and why?”
Play a tool-sorting game where students match picture cards of objects with a scale, ruler, thermometer, or measuring cup.
Examine grocery labels showing ounces or pounds, then discuss which store scale could measure each item.
